While ceramic logs can imitate natural wood logs they don’t tend to be visually interesting and sometimes are obviously artificial.  As a fireplace alternative, the sparkling beauty of this highly reflective fire glass can add elegance and an entire new look to a room and a fireplace.  In a vented fireplace with a flue or a chimney a homeowner can add a lot of decorative features without fear of fumes or gasses.  Recently ventless gas fireplaces with fire glass color have become available and alternative vent-free fireplaces are gaining popularity for their ease of installation.

Fire glass is especially engineered and treated to endure the heat of direct flame without collecting soot, dulling or cracking and losing the brilliance and sparkle, that glass lends a fireplace.  Smaller crushed or formed glass pieces are normally used for fire glass. Rounded or cracked glass is common and can be used to cover the plumbing of a gas fireplace giving it more aesthetic appeal as well as collecting and radiating the heat from the fire. Fire glass has usually been tumbled to remove some of the sharp edges from the glass.

In most cases, fire glass can be used instead of the ceramic logs currently used in many gas fireplaces. Red, orange and yellow fire glass may resemble glowing coals in a fireplace or fire pit while greens, blues or other colors can give a fireplace a unique look.

Gas fireplaces have grown in popularity with those concerned with environmentally friendly energy sources. While wood is a natural fuel, it also produces large amounts of soot, and ash and pollutants, which are released into the air. Wood fireplaces are notoriously inefficient heat sources and much of the potential energy from burning the wood is lost. Gas fireplaces are much more efficient in their use of energy, and ceramic logs while not the most efficient way to gather the heat produced and radiate it, do not put out toxic fumes or pollute the air.

Fire glass is much more efficient in gathering and holding the heat than ceramic logs and is beautiful at the same time.  Many types of fire glass are manufactured and then specially treated to be able to withstand temperatures up to 1300F.  Quality fire glass will not melt, crack and emits no toxic fumes. The glass can hold and then radiate the heat collected from the fire efficiently, while being beautiful and providing a unique focal point for the room.

Fire glass can be used with fire pits, vented fireplaces and unvented fireplaces. The unsightly plumbing that has been one of gas fireplaces most notable drawbacks can easily be disguised with glittering glass shapes.  Glass colors are easy to mix and match to taste, and give a unique look to any fireplace.

The fireplace doesn’t need to be specially constructed to use fire glass. Almost any gas fireplace or fire pit can easily use glass instead of the ceramic logs that are commonly seen, and even benefit by the increased efficiency of glass as opposed to ceramic.

Glass in a fire pit can emulate a glowing brazier with the natural colors of hot coals or glitter with multicolored glass giving interesting patterns and colors. Fire pits have the advantage of being free standing and the beauty of the fire can be appreciated from any angle. Vented or ventless gas fireplaces can also use fire glass instead of the traditional ceramic pieces or even in conjunction with them to add more interest to the fireplace.

While fire glass is a very practical choice for gas fireplaces and fire pits it is also very customizable. Whether the traditional glowing fireplace with its dancing flame is appealing, or a more modernistic and unusual look using multi color glass or gem colors is what the decorator hopes to achieve, fire glass, with its astounding selection of glass colors, shapes and sizes can deliver it. Rather than the plain standard fireplace, which although functional is certainly not arresting, a glass fireplace can draw every eye in the room to it.

Fire glass is attractive when the fireplace is in use and the glass is glowing with the flames from the clean burning gas flame. However, a glass fireplace it also maintains its visual appeal when the fireplace is not being used. Fire glass will remain clean and beautiful, reflecting the light in a room even when the fireplace is not lit. Even in the summer, the glass fireplace remains a beautiful focal point.  While aesthetics are not the only advantage to having a glass fireplace, the beauty and individuality of glass is certainly one of the advantages.

The ventless gas fireplace burner above shows the control valve for the unvented fireplace burner.  The control valve fits conveniently under the burner so it not easily seen.  Normally gas fireplaces have a valve sticking out from the burner and we use log, chip or pine cone kits to hide the controls.  The receiver for the remote control attaches to the fireplace control valve and we have hollowed out logs and rectangular boxes to hold the receiver in a design made to make the controls invisible.
